Trash cans hold potential danger for bears

ASHEVILLE – A mama bear seemed to have no problem getting into city trash cans as she and her cubs made their way through a Beaverdam neighborhood recently.

Michael Ruiz caught the scene on video as the bear tipped over trash cans and made off with bags of trash.

“They were going down the road knocking one (trash can) after another,” Ruiz said of the bears.

Wildlife biologist Justin McVey is hoping the video will prompt Asheville officials to consider bear-proof trash cans, especially in those neighborhoods like Beaverdam with high bear populations.

“It doesn’t make sense not to,” McVey said.
